Sixteen-year-old Morgan lives in a hick town. Her mom was killed in a car accident when she was two, her dad drinks, and her stepmom is a non-entity. Her boyfriend Derek is boring and she can't stop staring at her coworker Rob's cute butt. Then there's the kiss she shared with her neighbor Tessa . . . But when Morgan discovers a devastating secret about the one person she completely trusted, her entire world crashes and she must redefine her life and herself.
Review:
The Sky Always Hears Me: And the Hills Don't Mind is now one of my favorite contemporary novels. The last time that a narrator really captured my attention was months before I read this book.
Morgan's voice was authentic, snarky, and real. Morgan dealt with things that many teenagers now do. While this book was about Morgan deciding between three romantic interests, it was also about coming-of-age and discovering her sexuality. But those aren't the only things that Morgan dealt with. She also dealt with the prejudice because of her sexuality and had family problems.
Morgan's relationship with her grandmother was one that caused envy and her romantic interests weren't good enough for her.And even though Morgan was a bit annoying and childish, her flaws made her more relatable.
Overall, The Sky Always Hears Me: And the Hills Don't Mind was a realistic portrayal of a teenage girl's life and her quest to discover herself. While the big secret was anti-climatic, it was original. Kirstin Cronn-Mills wrote a wonderful debut that must be on everyone's must-read pile.
